║ GT-HELP ║ HELP ABOUT GT-HELP
╚═════════╩════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
GT-HELP is intended for Host Mode users of GT Power 15.50, giving you :
* Menu-driven access to most of the text files which configure
the various sections of your bulletin board. These files can
be displayed and updated via a suitable multi-file editor.
* Context-Sensitive Help provided in another editor window to
remind you of the rules relating to the file being edited.
* A tutorial mode for newer users.
* A Modem Library, allowing you to reconfigure GT for a different
modem by pick and point selection, and facilities to add new
modems into the library.

│ When to use GT-Help │
└─────────────────────┘
a) When setting up GT for the first time :
In most cases you can execute GT-INST.BAT for easy installation
of GT, then use GT-HELP to browse through the editable files
making any essential changes before the first test run.
See the EASY START section below.
b) When changes are needed to your GT installation.
Just execute GT-HELP from the DOS prompt, select topics from the
menus via the hotkeys and edit the associated files as required.
┌──────────────────────┐
│ About the Help Files │
└──────────────────────┘
Depending on your editor, the help information will either appear in a
second *window* beneath the file you are editing, or in a separate
*screen* which you can switch to. For example, in Qedit you can switch
between files using ALT-N (though you can also split the screen with
ESC-W-S).
Consult the doc's for your editor if you are not familiar with its
operation.
There isn't a help file associated with *this* file, but you will find
help files associated with all the other options that appear from
GT-HELP's menu.

│ Ways to use GT-Help │
└─────────────────────┘
If your editor handles multiple files by screen switching, or only
displays the first file at start up, you may find it more convenient to
execute GT-HELP in TUTORIAL mode for the first few sessions and to use
NORMAL mode thereafter.
a) Tutorial Mode:
In tutorial mode, the help files are displayed in the *first*
editor window, with the file(s) you are editing available in other
windows. This is useful for new users who may be less familiar
with the content of the GT control files.
Tutorial mode can be selected from the top menu, or you can turn
it on before starting GTH by using the /T switch, ie :
GTH /T
b) Normal Mode:
In normal mode, the file you are editing appears in the first
window. This is more convenient for regular use, once you
understand the main purpose of most of the files. The help file
remains available in the second window (or, if more than one file
is being edited, in the LAST window) for reference when you need
it.
If your editor operates by *splitting* the screen, then it probably
does not matter much whether you use the TUTORIAL or the NORMAL
mode.
┌────────────────────────┐
│ Editing the Help Files │
└────────────────────────┘
The HELP files are editable - you are welcome to edit them for your
own use as you discover other information not already there.
If you make a mess of the help files, you can always unzip the
originals from the GT-HELP distribution zip. Or, if you don't intend
to edit your help files and your editor is happy to work with read-only
files, you can protect them by executing the DOS command :
┌────────────── replace this with your own GT path.
┌─┴─┐
ATTRIB +R C:\GT\HLP\*.HLP
Please let me know of any errors or serious omissions you find in the
help files. That way I can correct them and release fresh copies
occasionally.

│ Easy Start for GT │
└───────────────────┘
a) If this is your first installation, you may find it convenient - if
you have not already done so - to install the files using
GTINST.BAT.
GT-INST.BAT is a simple batch file which creates appropriate
directories and unzips the files into the right place. It also
unzips the host mode example files, which is ideal if you want to
get something up and running quickly for evaluation. Then you can
use GT-HELP to gradually customise to your own requirements.
b) It is probably a good idea to quickly browse through all the
options presented in GT-HELP, running it in tutorial mode,
which will guide you through each of the important GT files.
Pressing return at each menu option will in most cases take you
progressively through all the files.
Sometimes (eg the door batch files) there are many alternatives and
GT-HELP will loop on a single option, asking the value of a
variable. With these you will need to select the following option
yourself after you have seen the first.
Note: Skip the Netmail option for first installation.
c) As each help file is presented, your editor should allow you to see
the actual file as it currently exists on your system. If the
editor does not automatically split the screen, then you will need
to give a command to switch to the next file. For example, in
Qedit ALT-N will cycle you through all the files in the current
edit section. In another editor the command might be different -
consult your editor docs if you are not too familiar with it.
In most cases there is no need to change anything or worry too much
about detail at the moment. Most of the files will work just as they
stand - you can gradually edit them the way you want when you have
found your way around the system.
┌───────────────────────┐
│ Essential Alterations │
└───────────────────────┘
Some things you OUGHT to do with GT-HELP before attempting to start GT
for the first time :
a) DOS SETUP :
In \autoexec.bat :
Add GTPATH
Put the GT path into your DOS path
Load DOORMAN
In \config.sys
Check FILES= BUFFERS= etc.
Suggestions are in the help screens for autoexec.bat and config.sys.
b) MODEM SELECTION :
Either select a modem from the GT-Help library, or create one of
your own.
c) GT SETUP :
Execute GT and examine all the values in the ALT-I screen.
Especially the COM PORT address, if your modem is on anything
other than COM1.
┌─────────────┐
│ What next ? │
└─────────────┘
a) You have now reached the end of "Help about GT-Help".
b) You are presently in your editor, so will need to get back to the
GT-Help menu.
If you are using your regular editor, this should be no problem.
Otherwise, try Alt-X which is frequently the exit command.
